Teen & Adult Off Ice Classes

Postponed until further notice.

All are welcome, you do not have to be a current NSA member to join! If you are interested, please email us at northernskatingacademy@gmail.com and we will send you the link to the class 15 minutes before.

Our classes are a low impact combination of a warm up song, two zumba-like dances, two stabilizing exercises repeated twice, and then we wrap up with 15-20 minutes of yoga! All you need is a little space, a pair of running shoes, an exercise / yoga mat, and optional but recommended blanket + throw pillow for yoga.

Class Details: Similar to our skating sessions, we begin with a warm up song to get the body moving. Then, the dance songs are fun icebreakers to get your heart rate up, challenge your memory, and encourage musicality. We will do the same songs for several weeks to get to know them. The stabilizing exercises are a series of weight-free deliberate movements with the purpose of engaging micro muscles and full body strength. Finally, the yoga stretches have a focus on flexibility and recovery. All sections are meant to evoke self care and love in a supportive environment! We hope you will join us!

Off-Ice Training

Off-Ice Training, or "Dry Land" training, is an integral part to developing skating skills. Off-Ice training aims to condition athletes to be mentally and physically fit in order to efficiently advance the quality of their practice and performance on the ice. Off-ice training also helps reduce risk of injury in practice by preparing the body to be ready to perform.

Our off-ice programs incorporate many aspects that are important to the sport of figure skating. Our sport specific training includes circuit training, conditioning, jump, spin, and field movement techniques; dance fitness for musicality and creativity, as well as yoga for flexibility and core strength focused stretches, and mental readiness.

One of our goals with off-ice training is for the program to introduce techniques skaters can use at home and before their own practices to improve their skills on their own time.

Coach Maddie has a vested interest in sport specific off ice training. She has experience delivering off ice classes to skaters, as well as firsthand experience with the training in order to improve her own skating.

In development are sport-specific programs for hockey and ringette players. If interested, please contact us!
